St. Luke United Church of Christ has a rich history that began in 1874. Over more than 150 years, this congregation has grown from a brush arbor gathering into a thriving, family-oriented institution with deep roots in faith, justice, and community.
Key Milestones
A group of courageous and determined individuals branched out from Zion A.M.E Church in Courtland, Virginia. They held their first worship services under a brush arbor on land in Sedley, Virginia, known as Claiborn Gates.
The church was officially established as St. Luke Christian Church on January 8, 1890, with the consent of R.M. Stephenson. The deed was granted to trustees Peter Chappell, Stephen Brown, and Thomas Ricks, after purchasing the land for $20.00.
Under the leadership of Rev. Smith Howell, the church joined the Congregational Christian denomination. Members erected a new building and renamed the church St. Luke Congregational Christian Church.
St. Luke United Church of Christ continues to thrive as a generational, family-oriented institution — a member of the Eastern Virginia Association and the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ.
